Case Study

Brothers Windham

Brand Identity System

Brothers Windham needed an identity system that functioned as a unifying symbol across merchandise, live performance materials, and digital platforms. The previous visual direction lacked scalability and structural consistency.

Project Overview

Brothers Windham needed an identity that could hold together across merchandise, live show promotion, and digital platforms without turning into a different design every time it was used.

  • No consistent hierarchy between a primary mark and supporting elements
  • Visual direction that leaned toward artwork rather than a repeatable identity
  • Inconsistent typographic logic across touchpoints
  • Limited scalability for small-format use (social avatars, thumbnails, favicon scale)
  • Merch applications at risk of becoming one-off designs instead of a cohesive line

The solution was to build a primary mark and supporting system with clear rules, designed to stay consistent while leaving room for growth.

Design Logic / Strategy

The objective was to establish a primary identity mark that could function as a stable anchor across all applications. The focus was a controlled system: one mark, one typographic logic, and a repeatable structure that scales.

Strategic Objectives

  • Create a primary mark that functions as a unifying symbol
  • Separate identity from album-style artwork
  • Establish typographic consistency across applications
  • Ensure small-format legibility (social icons, thumbnails, favicon scale)
  • Build a structure that allows expansion without redesign

Identity Construction

The final identity was built as a primary mark designed for repeatable use across formats and environments. Every element was developed with scalability, legibility, and structural clarity in mind.

Primary Mark

The mark functions as the band's central visual anchor. It is designed to be immediately recognizable at large scale on merchandise and stage materials, while remaining clear and legible in small digital placements.

Proportions were balanced to maintain stability whether the mark appears standalone or alongside supporting typography.

System Lockups

Supporting configurations were defined to maintain consistency under different layout constraints without introducing new visual logic. Each lockup inherits the same structural relationships and hierarchy.

Typography System

A controlled typographic approach was established to eliminate inconsistency across applications. Letterforms were selected for clarity, weight stability, and reliable reproduction across print and digital contexts.

Scalability & Reproduction

The identity was tested across multiple use cases, including small-format digital icons, merchandise prints, and large-scale applications. Contrast and form integrity were evaluated to prevent visual breakdown at extreme sizes.

Structural Logic

Spacing relationships and clear space rules were defined to maintain legibility and visual balance across environments. These constraints protect the mark from distortion and overuse.

Application & Performance

The identity was designed to function consistently across physical and digital environments. Applications were evaluated as performance tests of the system.

Merchandise & Live Performance Materials

On apparel and printed merchandise, the mark maintains clarity and authority without relying on complex background treatments. Its form supports single-color and limited-ink reproduction, reducing production constraints while preserving recognition. For posters, stage visuals, and promotional graphics, the identity anchors the layout rather than competing with supporting artwork. This separation allows expressive design elements to evolve without destabilizing the brand.

Digital Platforms

In small-format environments such as social avatars and thumbnails, the mark remains legible and recognizable. Contrast and form integrity were tested to prevent visual degradation at reduced scale.

Outcome & Longevity

The band now operates from a defined system. The completed identity provides Brothers Windham with a stable visual anchor that performs consistently across merchandise, live materials, and digital platforms.

This structural consistency strengthens recognition over time. Each new application reinforces the same primary mark instead of introducing variation that dilutes recall.

Because the system was built around repeatability and scalability, it supports growth without requiring redesign.
